What does the protagonist want?
He wants to either remove himself from the world or remove everyone else from it.


What is in the way of the protagonist to get what he/she wants?
He doesn't truly want to do this but he only wants attention. He wants someone to notice his hate for society.
He truly wants someone to notice him with all their effort. Whether a laugh from a rude joke or a reaction from it is fine with Earl.


What does the protagonist need?
Earl needs an impressionable friend. He needs someone who will listen yet have a witty answer to counter his feelings.


What is in the way of the protagonist to get what he/she needs?
His assumption that no one is on the same thinking plane that he places himself upon. This trait about him creates an aura that pushes people away.
